#YCIntroduces Marge Menke
Today for our miniseries #YCIntroduces, we interview one of our longest serving YC staff moment, Marge Menke, and ask her some questions before she's off on retirement (approaching soon!):
How long have you been here with us? I have been with the y-c school district 30 years.
What mattered the most about being a teacher? The thing that mattered most was that I was a positive influence on my fellow co-workers and students.
What helped you the most to communicate with or get through to students (how about parents)? Knowing that I too struggled as a student and feelings of compassion and building their self confidence and a positive role model.
What do you love the most about being a teacher? What I love most about being an Instructional Assistant is my passion to make a difference in the lives of struggling learners and help them believe in themselves as capable little humans.
What will you miss the most when you retire? I will miss the connection with my yces staff family and my students.
What advice would you give a young teacher? My advice for a young educator would be to find a good mentor and learn from them. Listen rather than respond to a struggling student. Sometimes all they need is to know someone is there for them and they are feeling safe.
If you could tell a student one last thing before leaving, what would that statement be? If I could tell a student one last word before I leave it would be - Keep doing your best, You may not learn this skill yet, but it will come. Always be kind, you never know what someone is feeling.
Anything else you would like to community of YC to know? The community of Y-C school district has and always will be close to me in heart. I started my Grade school years here at Carlton Grade School (Yamhill Carlton Elementary) for 8 years, then onto Y-C High School where I started dating my current husband of 47 years. It has felt good to be back in Carlton the last 6 years where I started my education and now to complete my working career at the same building. This district has been wonderful to work with.
