Specialist 1st Class Ivan Brewer

Updated: Dec 14, 2018

What an amazing day in YC’s Veteran’s Legacies Course. We interviewed Specialist 1st Class Ivan Brewer, who participated in the Vietnam War, and PFC Vic Banke who fought in WWII. Mr. Brewer was an assistant gunner and was a specialized operator of several different weapons. After his service ended he used the GI Bill to become a Vocational Ag teacher. He is the Grandfather of YCHS students Wesley and Luke Brewer.

PFC Banke participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and was in the lead battalion that fought through the Siegfried Line. As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, he helped to liberate the Wobbelin Concentration Camp, which had roughly 3,000 Jewish prisoners. Mr. Banke received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After WWII he worked for John Deere/Caterpillar as a parts manager for 35 years.

Thank you Mr. Brewer and Mr. Banke for your outstanding service to our nation, and for sharing your experiences with YC students.
