Oregon Computer Science Education Advocates: We Need Your Help!

Dear Computer Science advocate:

The high schools listed below have an exciting opportunity to offer computer science next year. They are investing in our students by partnering with Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program to build and grow our CS program. There are more than 500,000 open computer science positions (more than 3000 in Oregon alone) without qualified talent to fill them across all industries. We are trying to help ensure our students have access to the necessary education to ensure a successful future for them.

Action We’re Taking:

Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program recruits, trains, mentors, and places passionate technology professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors and teaching assistants. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and will join an existing high school teacher to teach computer science together. TEALS provides training for both parties, rigorous curricula, and opportunities for students to continue their education outside of the classroom.

Are you a computer science professional who wants to help develop the next generation of Oregon techies? Come learn more about the Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program and how coding pros like you are changing lives as TEALS volunteers!

Computer science is a vital driver in today’s global innovation economy, but most U.S. high schools – including more than 75% of Oregon high schools – are unable to offer rigorous CS courses. Without CS in high schools, our students are missing out on essential computational skills that will help them succeed in any career they wish to pursue, and professional skills that could lead to an economically secure future.

TEALS seeks to change that reality. Our volunteers work directly with classroom teachers to help them build and grow their CS teaching capacity through yearlong support and training to inspire the next generation of innovators and computer scientists.

If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity to help shape students’ career opportunities – all while having fun – come learn how TEALS might be the right fit for you!
